Doreen did her general nursing training at Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg and completed at Entabeni Hospital in 1976.
She went on to complete her midwifery at Addington Hospital in 1998. Doreen then worked in casualty as a trauma unit sister and ran an eye clinic. In 1980 Doreen gave birth naturally to her first baby, a son. This was a difficult birth experience and Doreen prepared herself extensively for the birth of her daughter in 1982 which was a wonderful experience. This is when she realized how important it was to be properly prepared for the birth experience. Doreen was fortunate to stay at home with her children until 1985 and enjoyed being totally involved with both of them while learning first hand the skills of parenthood.
By this time Doreen had developed her passion for babies and after extensive studies and research, she started her ante-natal practice in 1985. Additionally Doreen set up the Durban branch for The Association of Childbirth Education for Professional People and was chairlady for three years. She established the Private Nurse Society in Durban and was chairlady of that society for three years. Through all these societies everyone involved networked and shared expertise, and valuable knowledge was gained. In 1999 Doreen moved into Docnor Medical Centre in Durban North where she established the post-natal service, a mother craft program, a first aid workshop, she qualified as a callanetics instructor and also did pregnancy and post-natal exercises. In all her experience Doreen has realized the importance of sleep training and has become an absolute expert in this field. In 2000 Doreen started studying International Childbirth, a worldwide known course, through an American institution, which she completed in 2003. Doreen is one of a few internationally trained childbirth educators in South Africa.
Since 1985 Doreen has prepared approximately 4000 sets of parents for the birth of their babies and has had the privilege to share in the care and well-being of their babies. Doreen remains extremely passionate about her business and the babies in her clinic.
